Dehydration In Dogs
Dehydration in Dogs is Very Serious
There are several different things that can occur which creates dehydration in dogs. This can be serious so efforts should be taken to prevent it. If you can’t get the situation under control then consult with a veterinarian immediately. You should contact them even if it is after hours. The time difference for when you get assistance can be crucial. Your dog may not recover if you wait too long for something to be done. Dehydration can damage the vital organs.
One of the common reasons that dehydration in dogs occurs is due to diarrhea. Sometimes a dog will have virus that is over with in 24 hours or less. Of the diarrhea lasts longer then you should talk to your vet. If your dog has blood in the stools, vomiting, or seems like they are in pain around the abdomen then don’t wait that long to take your pet in.
Your dog may have gotten into some type of chemical that is toxic to them. Viruses including salmonella and gastrointestinal parasites can cause vomiting in a dog. The vomiting and the diarrhea may be the body’s way of getting rid of these problems. However, you need to realize that your dog may be losing vital fluids at the same time. When too much fluid is lost, blood pressure can be lowered and the blood will become thicker than it should be.
When it is very hot outside, it is vital that your dog has access to plenty of fresh water. Dehydration in dogs often occurs as the summer months heat up. People may be away from home for long periods of time and their dog is out of water. If you can’t be home, offer a large container of water that can contain several gallons. You may want to have more than one water location outside too. That way if one of them gets spilled your dog has access to other water.
It is a good idea to offer a place where your dog can get some solace from the sun too when it is hot. This includes a covered patio, garage, or even a dog house where they can go inside and have some shade. Dehydration in dogs can also occur when they are left in vehicles and the heat is too much for them. Even a few minutes in a car with the windows up can be very difficult for them to survive in.
If you think your dog may be suffering from dehydration, offer some type of drink that has electrolytes in it. Sports drinks are going to work very well for this. Your dog may not have the energy to drink on his or her own. Offering the liquid through a syringe may be a way to get them to consume it.
Dogs love the taste of chicken and beef broth. This can be a great way to get them to drink some liquids. You can also add bullion cubes to warm water and your dog will likely be enticed by the smell of it. Try to offer your dog some solid food but not too much. Instead of dog food offer some cooked rice, yogurt, or cottage cheese.
If your dog refuses to eat or drink then you definitely want to consult with your vet. Depending on the situation it may be necessary for them to give your dog fluids through an IV. It can be several days under such care before your dog is able to go home with you. It is possible for a dog to make a full recovery from dehydration if adequate care is given. Otherwise, it can cause death and you will lose a pet you have loved and cared for.
